about

Tape hiss and white noise has long been an obsession of A.M (Antony Milton) and on the Grey Spectrum Suite he doubles down on this by presenting 4 long pieces made almost exclusively using blank tapes played back on an old walkman.
The blank tapes in question are cassettes that were magnetically bulk erased after having a previous life at a company that specialised in documenting conferences. This erasure was at times imperfect and the odd ghostly sound creeps up out of the hiss.
#1 is a straight line recording that has been frequency split into 4 tracks before being panned and mixed to explore the raw source sound that will be further worked on the proceeding tracks.
#2 features a tape being played at full volume through a guitar amplifier and reverb pedal with subtle tweaks to the settings of each creating a roaring drone.
#3 is perhaps the most challenging and is the more dynamic of the set. Again it features a tape played through the Roland Jazz Chorus amp but with only subtle reverb and phasing achieved by moving a stereo microphone between the 2 speaker cones. This tape had been previously used for another project and some of the bass from that can still be heard in the mix.
#4 has as its source a straight line out to recorder track. The sound of the walkman motor was particularly loud on this recording, what at first seemed a very annoying drone. Ultimately the decision was made to embrace this drone by isolating it and then reintroducing various pitch shifted versions of the drone back into the mix to create a warm and more harmonically complex piece. As a result it is perhaps the 'prettiest' of the set.
